Museum’s one-woman show to mark Black History Month
The West Baton Rouge Museum, 845 N. Jefferson Ave., Port Allen, will present the Flying Geese Productions’ Off-Broadway show The Resurrection of Harriet Tubman for Literacy, a one-woman performance by Melissa Waddy-Thibodeaux, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12.
This free program is open to the public and is being offered in celebration of Black History Month and the museum’s showing of Ladies of Lincoln’s Era, a traveling exhibition from Exhibit Envoy, originated by Mission San Juan Capistrano — Orange County’s mission, historic landmark and museum.
Houston resident Waddy-Thibodeaux is known as an actor, re-enactor, storyteller, lecturer and playwright. She has performed for more than 40 years at venues throughout the world and at universities, schools, churches, conferences and festivals.
Waddy-Thibodeaux also teaches theater arts and acting classes to adults and children across the country. Her mission has always been to teach history via theatrics. She began Flying Geese Productions in 1997 to do just that as well as to encourage literacy and enlighten her audience on sometimes unknown historical facts.
Waddy-Thibodeaux portrays a variety of historical characters straight from the pages of history, and her award-winning portrayal of Harriet Tubman is now recognized as a National Parks Service regional program interpreting the Underground Railroad. Her thought provoking performance is followed by an interactive discussion with the audience.
This program is designed for audiences of all ages and extra credit forms are available for students attending the performance.
