La. Youth Orchestra plans second concert
The Louisiana Youth Orchestra will perform its second concert of the 2011-12 season at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, in the Magnolia Performing Arts Pavilion on the Baton Rouge Community College campus.
The orchestra is under the direction of Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra Assistant Conductor David Torns.
Admission is free.
This concert will feature Baton Rouge Music Teachers Association Piano Concerto Competition winners Irene Lien, junior division; and Emily Gu, senior division.
Lien will perform Joseph Haydn’s “Piano Concerto in D Major, Hob XVIII:11, 1st Movement.” Gu will perform W.A. Mozart’s “Piano Concerto No. 20 in d minor, 3rd Movement.”
The Louisiana Youth Orchestras will then perform selections from the Broadway hit musical Phantom of the Opera.
The Louisiana Youth Orchestras is the premier performing arts organization in the capital area. The orchestra program features more than 150 young musicians, ages 6-20, playing string, wind and percussion instruments.
Torns is music director of the LYO program and conducts the Louisiana Youth Orchestra. The Louisiana Junior Youth Orchestra is under the direction of Jennifer Cassin and consists of middle school level musicians. The Louisiana Junior String Ensemble is intended for elementary school level musicians and is conducted by Lisa McGibney.
The Louisiana Youth Orchestra Percussion Ensemble is currently under the direction of Chris Hoefer.
