Inmate rearrested after Facebook posts

St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office investigators have rearrested an inmate on counts of having contraband in the parish jail, including a cellphone that allowed him to post updates on his Facebook page, officials said.

Alvin T. Louis, 32, was arrested July 29 on one count of having contraband in a penal institution.

“The charge is the result of an investigation into pictures of Louis on Facebook,” Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Traci Landry said in a news release Tuesday.

Louis has been an inmate at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center — the parish jail — since October 2013 awaiting trial on drug and battery charges. He faces an additional five years in jail if he’s convicted of possessing contraband in the jail.

“In the pictures (on Facebook), Louis can be seen holding a cellphone,” Landry said.

The photos also show Louis posing with other inmates, and his Facebook profile photo shows him wearing a turban and with the name Alvin Albaby Louis.
