LAFAYETTE — A fire that destroyed an 18,000-square-foot Verot School Road home on Jan. 19 was ruled accidental Tuesday by the Lafayette Fire Department.
The two-story columned mansion burned to the ground as firefighters struggled to ferry water from other areas because there were no nearby fire hydrants.
The fire originated in the garage, but the precise cause is not known, according to a report on the fire department’s investigation.
Witnesses had initially reported a motorcycle on fire in the garage of the home, but the fire damage was too severe to determine whether the motorcycle caused the fire, according to the report.
“After a complete investigation into the fire, the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental,” the report stated.
