LAFAYETTE — Lafayette Parish sheriff’s deputies searched Wednesday for two men who crashed their car while fleeing from authorities after the duo tried to steal an ATV, prompting a “shelter in place” order for three nearby schools.
The three schools were Judice Middle, Ridge Elementary and Charles Burke Elementary schools.
Capt. Kip Judice said the order moves school officials to keep pupils in classrooms until the matter is resolved.
A homeowner discovered two men in the act of stealing an all-terrain vehicle Wednesday from a home on Casper Road, Judice said, and a responding deputy later spotted the suspected thieves in a vehicle.
Judice said the pair crashed in the 1000 block of Golden Grain Road, then fled on foot.
Deputies set up a perimeter and 15 deputies searched the area on foot Wednesday afternoon.
Judice said sheriff’s officials do not know the identities of the two men.
