Evacuations of platforms and drilling rigs operating in the Gulf of Mexico continued Saturday as a weakened Tropical Storm Karen moseyed its way toward land.
The Interior Department’s Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, said that 48 percent of the Gulf’s platforms and about 42 percent of its rigs were evacuated as of Saturday afternoon. The Gulf produces about 25 percent of the nation’s energy.
The evacuation and accompanying production suspension left more than 866,000 barrels of oil and 1.8 million cubic feet of natural gas shut in. That’s about 62 percent of the daily oil production from the Gulf and nearly 50 percent of the natural gas.
