2nd straight week a Saint wins the award

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees was the best player on offense in the NFC in Week 4, the NFL said Wednesday.

Brees completed 30 of 39 passes for 413 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions as the Saints (4-0) pummeled the Miami Dolphins 38-17 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Monday Night. His throws included touchdown passes of 43 yards and 27 yards to star tight end Jimmy Graham.

Graham won the award for the NFC’s best offensive player in Week 3 after catching nine passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-7 rout of the Arizona Cardinals at the Superdome.

Brees has completed almost 67 percent of his throws for 1,434 yards, 10 touchdowns and four interceptions this year. He is ranked second in the NFL in passing yards (behind Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, with 1,470) and first in the NFC.

In touchdowns, he ranks first in the NFC and third in the NFL, behind Manning (16) and San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers (11).

This is the 15th time Brees has won the NFC Offensive Player of the Week award since joining New Orleans in 2006. Monday’s contest marked the 10th time Brees has thrown for 400 or more yards, second-most in NFL history behind former Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino, who had 13 such games.

Saints wide receiver Marques Colston on Tuesday told reporters that performances from Brees like the one he had against Miami are “really not a surprise anymore.”

“It’s becoming the norm,” Colston said. “You lose sight of the fact that ... what he does on a day-to-day basis is really extraordinary.”
