Tanya Barnett Whitney of Sorrento represented Louisiana at the Wounded Warriors All-Female Summit in August in Washington, D.C.
Attendees were selected based on nominations from regional coordinators for the Wounded Warrior Project.
Forty women were selected from the more than 1,400 nominations submitted.
The event brought together women from all over the U.S. to discuss issues affecting women veterans and to highlight programs that are needed to support women veterans and their families.
During the four day summit, the veterans held meetings with representatives from the White House Office of Public Engagement, First Lady Michelle Obama’s staff on the Joining Forces Program for veterans and military families, the Veteran’s Administration Executive Offices, and several Congressional liaison offices on veterans affairs.
Whitney is a retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant who served several combat tours in Iraq, Afghanistan and other Middle East countries during her nearly 28 years of service.
She was awarded the Legion of Merit for her service.
Whitney continues to serve the military as a member of several local veterans’ organizations advocating for all veterans and their families.
She is married to Robert Whitney Jr., of Sorrento, and has two children, Robert III and Rebekah Whitney. She is the daughter of Fern Barnett and the late Frederick Barnett of Sorrento.
