- LSU and Auburn ended up tying for the SEC championship with 6-1 records. Auburn was 10-1 and ranked No. 7 and got a bid to the Sugar Bowl over 8-3 LSU which was ranked No. 16.
- Tommy Hodson’s four finalists in his recruiting process were LSU, Tulane, Michigan and Stanford. His primary recruiter at Michigan was first-year LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.
- The son of a soldier, Eddie Fuller thought he would wind up at Auburn. His father was all set to be transferred to nearby Fort Benning, Ga., but instead the Fuller family wound up at Fort Polk. Fuller and his younger brother Vincent ended up playing at Leesville High School before going on to LSU.
- The win was a high-water mark for LSU football for years to come. Starting in 1989, LSU would suffer losing seasons in eight of its next 11 campaigns, costing Mike Archer and his successors Curley Hallman and Gerry DiNardo their jobs.
