The Pointe Coupee Parish Police Jury on Sept. 10 adopted the Scope of Services plan for the first phase of the False River South Flats Ecosystem Restoration Project.
The plan outlines more than $1.5 million worth of environmental improvements for the oxbow lake. The work will be managed by Professional Engineering Consultants Corporation.
The False River restoration project is designed to improve the water quality and aquatic habitat for the lake, which has been in a state of decline for the past 30 years because of excessive siltation.
The restoration project will include island/terrace construction in the lake’s South Flats, which are located south of New Roads between Jarreau and Lakeland.
According to the scope of work plan, the engineering firm will use hydraulic dredging to remove the excessive silt that has settled at the bottom of the lake and deposit it in deeper waters or on nearby land.
The state Legislature has allocated $500,000 toward the first phase of the project, and last year allocated an additional $1 million in state funds toward the restoration effort.
The West Baton Rouge Museum will present a lunchtime lecture at noon Wednesday titled “Mystique of Perique Tobacco”, which will feature photographer Charles Martin.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
The lecture will take place in the museum gallery where more than 30 black and white photographs by Martin are on display.
Martin’s photographs feature local history regarding the painstaking agricultural process of perique cultivation.
