Police issued arrest warrants Saturday for two men wanted in the Sept. 4 fatal shooting that detectives believe was drug-related.
Cpl. Don Coppola Jr, a police spokesman, said Curtis Howard Jr., 18, and Brain Julius Nero, 22, are wanted in the shooting death of Rayjaun Martin, 20, at 10090 Big Bend Ave.
The suspects deliberately targeted Martin and the other victim because the suspects knew the victims had drugs in their vehicle, Coppola said.
The drugs were stolen after the shooting, the police spokesman said
Coppola said he does not know how the suspects knew about the drugs or what type of drugs were taken.
According to arrest warrants, Martin was the passenger in a vehicle traveling east on Big Bend that pulled into a driveway at 10090 Big Bend at 10:48 p.m. to turn around when another vehicle pulled in behind them, blocking their path.
The warrants do not say who was driving the car that blocked the victims’ car.
Martin and the other victim stepped out of the car and found Howard, known to the second victim as “Neutron,” and Nero standing with handguns drawn, the warrants said.
Howard pointed his handgun at Martin’s head and yelled, “Give it up,” the warrants said.
The second victim grabbed Nero’s gun and the two briefly wrestled over it before the victim disarmed Nero and ran, the warrants said.
Howard then fired shots at both victims, hitting Martin multiple times, the warrants said.
The other victim told police he did know Martin had been shot, the warrants said.
The surviving victim identified the two suspects from photo lineups, the warrants said.
Howard, 9588 Great Smokey Avenue, Baton Rouge, is wanted for first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon and armed robbery, the warrant says.
Nero, 922 Chipley St., Baker, is wanted for principal to first-degree murder, principal to attempted first-degree murder and armed robbery, the warrant says.
Anyone with any information is urged to contact the Violent Crimes Unit at 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at 344-7867.
