This listing at 1314 Napoleon Ave. is not only an historic piece of property; it is also a distinctive condominium in its own right.
“This condo is designed to impress your company as well as entertain them,” said Bart Gillis, the listing agent with Keller Williams Realty. “This townhouse is the developer’s personal unit and is practically a stand-alone, four-story building within St Elizabeth’s, a circa-1860 Gothic landmark once owned by writer Anne Rice.”
The St. Elizabeth’s development comprises an entire city block on the parade route in Uptown New Orleans. It’s surrounded by a sturdy wrought iron fence complete with a plaque detailing its historic status and its entrance is guarded by two snow white angels.
“The building itself features security, gorgeous common areas, a nice private swimming pool shielded by part of the structure and a fitness room,” noted Gillis. “This development really is a stunner!”
This unit’s ground floor is an impressive foyer ideal for hosting gatherings. An extra-wide sparkling white door opens onto a room with clerestory windows, exposed brick walls, crystal chandeliers, ceiling fans and gorgeous shiny wide pine floors.
An impressive stairway bounded by exposed brick walls and iron railings leads to the upper floors. Day-to-day living is centered on the second and third floors which house the master suite, kitchen, living and dining areas.
The living and dining rooms have an old New Orleans feel with exposed brick walls, wide pine floors, an abundance of windows and ceiling fans. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances: a double sink, built-in microwave, range, and refrigerator. There are plenty of cabinets and drawers for storage space and long, long windows let in plenty of light.
The master suite is quite cozy and light-filled and also boasts wide pine floors and a marble mantle. Its bath features a Jacuzzi tub surrounded by marble as well as a separate shower. Again, there are plenty of windows for a bright feeling.
“The fourth floor, for guests, boasts two bedrooms, a bath and a secondary living room,” said Gillis. “Your guests won’t just have a separate room, but a separate floor.” The unit includes an elevator and there is also parking for three cars.
Novelist Anne Rice and her poet husband Stan were living at 1020 St. Philip St. in the Irish Channel, near Redemptorist School when she decided to renovate the former St. Elizabeth’s Children’s Home, 1314 Napoleon Ave. on the corner of Prytania Street. It was originally built as a boarding school in 1865 and turned into an orphanage for girls in 1870 by The Daughters of Charity. Rice used it as a repository for her extensive doll collection and installed members of her family there in 1993. She hosted many parties and fund raisers at this gorgeous building, including her famous Halloween ball. In 2004, Rice sold it and the next year it was renovated into condominiums; this is the developer’s unit that is for sale.
Uptown, where this structure is located on the corner of Napoleon Avenue and Prytania Street, was developed during the 19th century, mostly from land that had been plantations in the Colonial era. Uptown was built along the higher ground along an old natural Mississippi River levee – the “sliver by the river” – as we call it now. Streets were laid out either roughly paralleling the river’s curve or perpendicular to it.
Major roadways echoing the river’s crescent include Tchoupitoulas Street closest to the river, Magazine Street with its one lane of traffic in both directions and famous St. Charles Avenue, home to the St. Charles Avenue streetcar line and the city’s “millionaires’ row.”
Furthest back is wide Claiborne Avenue, which until the early 20th century had a canal running down its neutral ground, and in much of Uptown was the back boundary of developed area until the drainage pumps designed by A. Baldwin Wood were installed.
