Novelist Anne Rice and her poet husband Stan were living at 1020 St. Philip St. in the Irish Channel, near Redemptorist School when she decided to renovate the former St. Elizabeth’s Children’s Home, 1314 Napoleon Ave. on the corner of Prytania Street. It was originally built as a boarding school in 1865 and turned into an orphanage for girls in 1870 by The Daughters of Charity. Rice used it as a repository for her extensive doll collection and installed members of her family there in 1993. She hosted many parties and fund raisers at this gorgeous building, including her famous Halloween ball. In 2004, Rice sold it and the next year it was renovated into condominiums; this is the developer’s unit that is for sale.
Uptown, where this structure is located on the corner of Napoleon Avenue and Prytania Street, was developed during the 19th century, mostly from land that had been plantations in the Colonial era. Uptown was built along the higher ground along an old natural Mississippi River levee – the “sliver by the river” – as we call it now. Streets were laid out either roughly paralleling the river’s curve or perpendicular to it.
