The New Orleans Saints on Sunday announced the signing of six players to their practice squad after they cleared waivers.
The list is topped by former Tulane quarterback Ryan Griffin, who was waived in one of 22 moves the Saints made Saturday afternoon to trim their roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players.
Joining Griffin on the practice squad are wide receiver Saalim Hakim, tight end Michael Higgins, fullback Austin Johnson, tackle Marcel Jones and cornerback Jumal Rolle. All six were waived Saturday by the Saints.
Hakim and Higgins both spent time on the Saints practice squad and active roster last season.
Like Griffin, Hakim, Higgins, Johnson and Jones went through training camp with the Saints this summer. Rolle was claimed off waivers from the Buffalo Bills last week but was waived on Saturday as well.
Griffin impressed the Saints coaches in training camp and was expected to e signed to the practice squad if he cleared waivers. He played in all four exhibition games and completed 32 of 59 passes for 380 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
Hakim had two receptions for 61 yards, but was caught behind a large group of players vying for the third, fourth and fifth receiver spots that went to Kenny Stills, Nick Toon and Andy Tanner, while Higgins caught three passes for 15 yards.
Of the six players signed to the practice squad, only one — Jones — was drafted by the Saints.
He was a seventh-round pick in 2012 and earned a spot on the active roster, but spent his rookie season on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury just before the first game.
In addition to tackle, Jones got some reps at guard in training camp and in the four preseason games.
The Saints have two more spots to fill on their practice squad. Players on the practice squad earned a bump in pay this season to a minimum of $6,000 per week this season — up from $5,700 a week last season.
Former UL-Monroe tight end Keavon Milton, who was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Saints this spring and was among their cuts Saturday, was claimed Sunday by the Cleveland Browns.
