Teachers at 20 Ascension Parish schools received grants worth $54,000 in August from The Ascension Fund.

School Impact Grants of $2,500 each and Teacher Grants ranging between $500 and $1,000 were recently awarded during visits to schools.

“Our grant recipients are excited and ready to begin implementing their projects in the classroom. With the transition to Common Core State Standards for English language arts and math, many of our awarded grants address innovative ways to integrate these new standards in the classroom creating highly rigorous and relevant learning opportunities for our students,” said Jennifer deFrances, Ascension Fund executive director.

The Ascension Fund was established 21 years ago as a project of the Rotary Club of Gonzales. Original pledges of $800,000 for the creation of The Ascension Fund were placed in an endowment, the income from which now funds the grants.

The fund provided its first grant in 1992, and since that time has given more than 1,100 grants representing $1.25 million in awards to area public schools and teachers.

The Ascension Fund is guided by a board of directors, and the invested funds are overseen by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation.

Serving on the Board of Directors are President Buddy Wells, Vice President Donald Songy, Secretary Lisa Philippe Dunigan, Treasurer Brad J. Walker, Michael Buturla, Robyn Penn Delaney, Sherrie Despino, Malcolm J. Dugas Jr., Fritz Englade Sr., Sonny Graugnard, Angela Lambert, Martin McConnell, Dr. Cherron Philippe, Timothy E. Pujol, Paulette Rosamond, Beryl S. Smith, Donald Songy, Sam Speligene and Peggy Walker.
