LAFAYETTE — A 78-year-old Jeanerette man has been arrested in St. Landry Parish on two counts of child molestation, Sheriff’s Office officials said Thursday.
Jules Gaspard is accused of inappropriately touching a boy while Gaspard was visiting friends in Washington.
The boy’s mother contacted detectives Aug. 12 to report the alleged abuse, Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said.
Sheriff’s Office Capt. Megan Vizena said Gaspard, who had been a longtime friend of the boy’s family, was convicted on a count of child molestation 25 years ago for which he served time in jail.
Vizena said it was unclear how long Gaspard served of his sentence, and she noted that at the time of Gaspard’s conviction in the 1980s, felons convicted of sex crimes were not required to register as sex offenders.
“We are investigating whether there were any more victims in those 25 years,” Vizena said.
Gaspard remained in the St. Landry Parish jail, where he was booked Wednesday. Vizena said no bond had been set.
