LAFAYETTE — A convicted sex offender who asked a homeowner in Crowley for yard work Monday was caught breaking into the home early Tuesday, Crowley police reported.
Crowley Police Chief K.P. Gibson said Michael Renee Matthews, 47, was inside the residence when police caught him after the homeowner dialed 911 at 2 a.m.
“The homeowner reacted in a manner which helped avoid conflict with the suspect and prevented a really bad incident from occurring,” Gibson said.
Gibson said Matthews was with a group of companions Monday when he asked the resident if they could do yard work.
Gibson said residents should be cautious when hiring strangers for work around the house.
Matthews was booked on one count of home invasion.
“Matthews has an extensive criminal history and is currently a registered sex offender,” Gibson said. “Matthews has been charged and convicted in the past with rape, burglary and attempted murder.” Gibson said his office has notified parole officials about Matthews’ arrest.
