Brave Heart — Children in Need discussed the Christmas program that provides Christmas bags for the 4,000 children in foster care at its Aug. 6 board meeting at the Galleria Building.
Lea Evans, Rezzie Meyer, Janis Lowe, Rachel and Sarah Grace, Zora and Laurel Olsson and Ina and Lynette Navarre of the Baton Rouge Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution attended the Louisiana DAR workshop Aug. 9-10 in Vidalia.
District V members met to plan a project that will support literacy promotion in Louisiana. State officers shared information on the duties and expectations of their respective offices and provided contact information for chapter officers. State committee chairwomen gave a synopsis of their committees, ways that chapter members can participate in committee goals and contests, and gave deadlines for chapter committee reports.
DAR membership is open to women 18 or older who can prove lineal, bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence. For more information, email JSM1225@aol.com.
Craig Colten, Carl O. Sauer professor of geography at LSU, spoke at the Infrastructure and Equity Conference in Bogota, Columbia, on Aug. 21. The principal host and organizer was Columbia Humanitaria, a federal agency created in the wake of disastrous La Niña floods in 2010-11, which guides relief and rehabilitation in the wake of disasters and fosters strong institutional and financial strategies to face future hazard events.
Army National Guard Pfc. Lanicia S. Smith has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Smith is the daughter of Katrina Smith, of Baton Rouge, and is a 2009 graduate of Cecilia High School.
