LAFAYETTE — More than 2,000 of the Ragin’ Cajuns faithful piled into the Cajundome for Fan Day Sunday to meet the 2013 University of Louisiana, Lafayette’s Ragin’ Cajuns football team.
Cajuns coach Mark Hudspeth welcomed fans with an energetic message about teamwork and told the crowd it was unbelievable to see so many turn out for the event.
“There is a saying that goes ‘Teamwork makes the Dream work,’ ” Hudspeth said.
“That means having a football team, a band, cheerleaders, the student body and a fan base that is committed to the team goals is what allows us to bring home bowl championships.”
After never winning a bowl game in program history, UL-Lafayette is coming off back-to-back seasons where the Ragin’ Cajuns won the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl in the Mercedes Benz Superdome. The new success has created an unprecedented buzz around the program and the university.
“The turnout we had this year is incredible,” said Corey Hardy, a UL-Lafayette alumnus who attended Fan Day with his brother. “It makes it even more amazing knowing how far we’ve come so quickly.”
The Pride of Acadiana Marching Band serenaded the Cajundome with a play list of songs fans can expect to hear this fall inside Cajun Field.
Fans also had the opportunity to pose for pictures and get autographs from the entire Ragin’ Cajuns football team, including defending New Orleans Bowl most valuable player Terrance Broadway.
Hudpseth, in his third season at UL-Lafayette, told fans to expect even more intensity out of his team than ever before.
He revealed the Cajuns will be wearing white helmets, white jerseys and white pants in the season opener Saturday against the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.
“Our goal is always to protect Cajun Field,” Hudspeth said. “We open on the road, though, and we’re going to white them out. We’re ready to go!”
Fans, like Hardy, are just as enthusiastic as Hudspeth is for the fast-approaching season.
“There’s no one on our schedule we can’t beat,” said Hardy. “We’ll be underdogs a few times, but every team we play is scared of us. I expect a 10-win season.”
