MIAMI — Miami Dolphins tight end Dustin Keller will miss the entire season because of a right knee injury, a person familiar with the diagnosis said Sunday.
The person confirmed the extent of the injury on condition of anonymity because the Dolphins hadn’t commented.
Keller was hurt in the second quarter of Saturday’s exhibition game at Houston. His leg bent unnaturally when he was tackled by D.J. Swearinger on an incompletion, and he was carted off the field.
Keller signed a $4.25 million, one-year contract with the Dolphins in March after five seasons with the New York Jets.
MANUEL HAS ‘PROCEDURE’ ON LEFT KNEE: In Pittsford, NY., Buffalo quarterback EJ Manuel had what Bills coach Doug Marrone would only call “a procedure” on his left knee Sunday morning and will miss the rest of the preseason.
Marrone, who declined to characterize the medical attention the quarterback received as anything other than a “procedure,” says it was “very, very minor” and that Manuel has a good chance of returning before the start of the regular season.
Manuel was hurt in Buffalo’s preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings on Friday. He did not leave the game because of injury but had swelling in the knee Saturday morning. Marrone said that Manuel will miss the rest of the preseason and be evaluated daily after that. The Bills chose Manuel out of Florida State with the 16th overall pick in the draft.
COPLES OUT INDEFINITELY WITH ANKLE INJURY: In New York, Jets linebacker Quinton Coples, New York’s sacks leader last season as a rookie, is out indefinitely with an ankle injury that will require surgery.
The Jets announced Sunday night that Coples, injured in the team’s 37-13 preseason win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday night, will have a “medical procedure” on his right ankle Tuesday and will miss the remainder of the preseason.
WOLFE SAYS HE’LL BE BACK ON THE FIELD SOON: In Englewood, Colo., Derek Wolfe said he’ll be back on the football field soon. The Denver Broncos hope fellow starters Champ Bailey, Wes Welker, Louis Vasquez and Stewart Bradley will be there with him.
All of them were hurt in Denver’s 40-10 preseason loss at Seattle on Saturday night.
Wolfe accompanied his teammates on their flight home after being whisked from the field in an ambulance after a scary scene in which he lay prone on the field for a few minutes following a hit to his head.
MAYBIN RELEASED: In Cincinnati, the Bengals released linebacker Aaron Maybin, a fifth-year player who signed with Cincinnati as a free agent in January.
Maybin was Buffalo’s first-round pick out of Penn State in 2009. He has played for the Bills and the Jets, who released him last November. Maybe had appeared in 47 career games.
The Bengals also waived receiver Tyrone Goard and cornerback Troy Stoudermire on Sunday. Both were undrafted college free agents.
QB TRENT EDWARDS SIGNS: In Lake Forest, Ill., the Bears signed QB Trent Edwards to a one-year contract and waived WR Jerrell Jackson.
Edwards has started 33 games in a five-season career with Buffalo, Jacksonville, Oakland and Philadelphia. The former Stanford quarterback has more than 6,000 yards passing, with 26 TDs and 30 interceptions in his career.
Originally a third-round selection by the Bills, he is 14-19 as a starter.
