The Southern football team will conduct the first of two full-squad scrimmages on Saturday with an eye on improving execution and communication.
The scrimmage, which is set to start at 9 a.m., will consist of the first-team offense against the first-team defense, as well as the second-team units squaring off with some third-unit players seeing action.
Coach Dawson Odums said the scrimmage will focus on game-day situations: red-zone, goal-line and open-field scenarios.
“Everything will be situational,” Odums said. “We’ll work on being backed up on our own goal line. Just all game-day situations.”
Odums said he wants to see how far the Jaguars have progressed.
“I’m looking for execution (Saturday), to see how much better we’ve gotten,” he said. “I want to see communication from coaches and players.
“We want to see communication out of the secondary.”
The secondary will be short-handed as both senior Virgil Williams and sophomore Marquon Webster will be held out because a series of heat-related illnesses.
Even with Williams and Webster out, Odums said he is enthusiastic about what his secondary can do Saturday.
“I’m excited about the secondary,” Odums said. “I think we’ve got some good players back there.”
The first-unit defensive secondary will consist of senior cornerback Johnathon Mack, junior cornerback Kevin King, junior safety Omar Cook and either sophomore Deonte McDuffy or junior Jaleel Richardson.
The secondary will be tested against a strong receiving corps, a group Odums expressed confidence in.
“Our receiving corps is fantastic, Odums said. “We have a lot of speed and a lot of athleticism. I think there’s going to be some exciting plays on both sides of the ball. Those guys will make plays. We’ve been preaching play the next play.”
After two weeks of practice, Saturday’s scrimmage is something many of the players are looking forward to.
“I think the guys will be excited about getting out there and doing a little game situations,” Odums said. “We’ve got a poised football team. We have great leadership from our seniors. We’re just excited to see where we are right now.”
Saturday’s scrimmage is open to the public.
