Each week The Advocate asks a different “quiz taker” for his or her current favorites in pop culture.
QUIZ TAKER: Julie Sherrill, 40 something, chairwoman for the American Cancer Society’s 2013 Jamaica Me Crazy: A Party for a Cure event
WHAT I’M LISTENING TO: “My music is all over the place, and the selection depends on my mood. My favorite band is Incubus. Love to blare their music in the car driving down the road. I also love anything ’80s, or anything I can dance to. One of my favorite songs to dance to is ‘Jessie’s Girl’ by Rick Springfield. The Guttersharks, a local band who will be performing at Jamaica Me Crazy, sing it and I always get on stage, dance and play the tambourine to it when I go watch them. And yes, I will be doing it at the event! A friend just introduced me to the music of Jason Isbell. His music is very raw and real. For quiet time, I love George Winston. Brilliant pianist.”
WHAT I’M READING: “I read The Advocate daily! (duh!) Have to have my monthly issues of City Social, In Register and 225. My selection in books varies like my music. Love anything by John Steinbeck and Carl Hiaasen. For light reading I like Richard Paul Evans. And, of course, I have to have a good meaningless book for beach reading.”
WHAT I’M WATCHING: “I am a Dexter addict! I love the loops they throw you. Total unexpected glorious madness. So sad that this is the last season. I also have to have my weekly fill of the ‘Real Housewives’ (yes, really). Movies are a must for me, primarily comedies. I love anything that has Will Ferrell in it. Anxiously awaiting ‘Anchorman 2!’ You will never catch me watching a horror movie. I still have nightmares from watching ‘Salem’s Lot!’ Any movie that has Phillip Seymour Hoffman in it is usually a must also. He’s a brilliant actor. And what girl doesn’t love ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s?’ ”
WHERE I’M SURFING (ON THE INTERNET): “I surf CNN.com several times a day, as well as TheAdvocate.com, Nola.com and ESPN. (Yes, I’m a sports girl.) I also have a few sites that I get alerts for on a daily basis, such as RueLaLa and Gilt. Who doesn’t love designer stuff at a discount? I also check Expedia and other travel sites often for deals on the vacations I never seem to be able to take!”
WHAT’S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? “My guilty pleasure: Krispy Kreme doughnuts and a Diet Coke. The Diet Coke makes me feel a little less guilty about it.”
BONUS QUESTION: What has been the highlight of your summer? “The highlight of my summer has been having my son, Alex, home to visit. He moved to Colorado last August, and I’m always counting the days until his next visit. He’s the love of my life.”
EVENT INFORMATION: The Cancer Society’s Jamaica Me Crazy fundraiser will feature music, dancing and a silent auction starting at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Hilton Capitol Center, 210 Lafayette St., Baton Rouge.
