Original Cognac Cocktail
Serves 1. Recipe provided by Cognac Ferrand is adapted by David Wondrich from “Jerry Thomas Bar-Tenders’ Guide,” 1862.
3 ml superfine sugar
5 ml water
60 ml Pierre Ferrand 1840 Original Formula
5 ml Mathilde Orange X.O. Liqueur
2 to 3 dashes aromatic bitters
1. In a mixing glass, stir sugar with water until sugar has dissolved.
2. Add Pierre Ferrand, orange liqueur and bitters.
3. Fill glass with cracked ice, stir well and strain into chilled cocktail glass. Twist lemon peel over the top.
Note: For an Improved Original Cognac Cocktail, substitute maraschino liqueur for the orange liqueur and add a dash (or 3 to 4 drops) of absinthe.
