LB Lamin Barrow was chosen by his teammates to wear No. 18 this season, an honor given to a player who has been successful on and off the field and demonstrated exceptional leadership. The senior from Marrero said he’ll have fond memories of wearing No. 57 his first three seasons after changing into his new jersey for the first practice of preseason camp Monday:

The Advocate: What are your thoughts about getting jersey No. 18? That’s a pretty big honor.

Lamin Barrow: It’s a huge honor. I’m very humbled. To grow up and see this team and see guys like Matt Mauck and Jacob Hester and then my freshman year (tight end) Richard Dickson and he gave it to (running back) Richard Murphy and then Brandon Taylor. You look up to these guys and you try to emulate these guys. To get voted on this by your peers makes this bigger than any kind of preseason award.

TA: What was your reaction when they announced it?

LB: I was surprised, but I was happy and smiled a little bit. They had a lot of good candidates — (quarterback) Zach (Mettenberger), (running back Alfred) Blue, (safety) Craig Loston. You couldn’t go wrong with any of them. Those were my three guys.

TA: Did they have to take the jersey in after defensive end Bennie Logan wore it for a year? (Logan weighs 60-plus pounds more than Barrow.)

CL: (Laughs) We got new jerseys because we have new numbers this year, so it fits good. Bennie kind of stretched that thing out.
