LIVINGSTON — With the first day of school just around the corner, the Livingston Parish School Board on Thursday approved a number of final steps for construction projects at several parish schools.
The school system has a “few loose ends” to tie up on construction projects at several schools, but the schools should be ready to go when school starts Aug. 9, Superintendent John Watson said.
“I think we’ll be ready,” Watson said.
The School Board approved notices of substantial completion for window renovations at Denham Springs Elementary School, parking and drainage improvements at Denham Springs Freshman High School, and concrete paving and parking lot replacements at Denham Springs High School.
The board also approved a change order of $66,616 for plumbing improvements at South Fork Elementary.
The original projected cost of the project was about $7.25 million, but previous change orders brought it to $7.86 million. The new change order sets the cost at about $7.9 million.
The board granted tax-exempt status to contractors building a classroom addition at South Fork Elementary and an addition and roof repairs at Westside Junior High School.
The board had voted a few years ago to allow contractors to submit bids without taxes included on projects that reach a certain threshold, Watson said.
The move saves the school system money, Watson said.

MILLAGE RATES: The board agreed to hold a public hearing Sept. 5 about its millage rates for the 2013-14 fiscal year.
The board originally was set to conduct the hearing at its meeting Thursday.
However, the hearing was pushed back after school system officials realized a law enacted during the 2013 legislative session dictating rules for public hearings on millages took effect Thursday, Watson said.
The new law says public notices of hearings about any tax or millage rates have to be announced at least 30 days before the hearings take place.
