An anonymous donor has paid for the kneelers at St. Mary’s Assumption Church, 2030 Constance St., in the Irish Channel, to be repadded.

Work on the heavy wooden kneelers in the center isles recently was completed, and the kneelers on the outer pews were removed from their iron hinges and re-installed Friday.

St. Mary’s was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974 and cited as a unique example of German baroque art and architecture in America. Redemptorist Fathers founded St. Alphonsus Parish in 1843 and care for it today.

The parish includes St. Mary’s and now the National Shrine of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos. The shrine holds Seelos’ remains and relics from his life, including his crucifix, which is used in prayers for the sick after the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass.

The donor’s gift coincides with the Feast Day of St. Alphonsus Liguori, patron of the parish and founder of the Redemptorist order.
