Forty-six high school juniors, seniors and recent graduates from 25 schools in the metro area participated in the annual Health Career Camp at Touro Infirmary.

In its sixth year, the Health Career Camp, with the support of the Jackie Wolff Fund and the Keller Family Foundation, included the largest class in the camp’s history. The one-week program included 10 clinical rotations in departments such as emergency, cardiovascular, physical therapy and medical technology, just to name a few. Working in small teams, students benefited from hands-on learning activities as well as the opportunity to meet and observe healthcare professionals in their work environment.

This year’s program began with orientation and CPR training, as students completed 10 clinical rotations throughout the week. They also enjoyed their own health and safety fair, featuring hands-on activities on the BMI, Evacusled and Hoyer lift, hand hygiene, infection prevention, vital signs and wheelchair safety.

Camp ended July 26 with a field trip to Children’s Hospital, a brain injury prevention workshop by the Rehab staff, and a graduation fit for future healthcare professionals.

“I am proud of our Class of 2013, but my hat really goes off to our staff that taught and mentored the students,” said Denise Chetta, volunteer services director. “The Career Camp is a prime example of Touro values, especially our welcoming spirit, professionalism and teamwork.”
