A man appeared to have accidentally shot himself in the face during a standoff with Livingston Parish sheriff’s deputies Tuesday afternoon at a Denham Springs-area apartment, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.
Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Live Oak Trace apartments around 5:30 p.m., responding to a report of a suspicious incident, Sgt. Gene Higginbotham said in a news release.
Deputies found a man close to where the incident was reported, but the man barricaded himself inside one of the apartments, Higginbotham said.
The Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team was called to the scene to persuade the man to surrender, Higginbotham said.
The Special Response Team used nonlethal chemical agents inside the apartment to get the man out, and he eventually was taken into custody, Higginbotham said.
Deputies noticed what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the lower part of the man’s face. He was taken to a Baton Rouge hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, Higginbotham said..
Deputies are still investigating the incident.
