DENHAM SPRINGS — A 14-year-old boy drowned Tuesday at the newly opened Cajun Lagoon water park off La. 16 between Denham Springs and Watson, Livingston Parish authorities said.
Livingston Parish District 5 firefighters and Sheriff’s Office deputies were called around 1 p.m. about the drowning, District 5 Deputy Chief Joe Koczrowski said.
Medical personnel tried to revive the youth, but were unsuccessful, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Investigators from the state Fire Marshal’s Office also responded to the scene. Authorities spent a few hours at the park before leaving.
No information about the victim or the cause of the drowning was available by Tuesday evening. The Sheriff’s Office said it was still investigating the incident and would release more information at a later time.
The owners of the park did not speak to reporters Tuesday afternoon.
A family friend of the owners told reporters the boy was with a Louisiana church group visiting the water park.
The family friend, who declined to give his name, said lifeguards were on duty and performed CPR on the boy before medical personnel arrived.
The park shut down Tuesday after the drowning. Park officials posted on Cajun Lagoon’s Facebook page that it would be closed Wednesday and should reopen around 10 a.m. Thursday.
Charles Taylor, Lori Taylor, Melissa Ray and Jason Ray are listed as the park’s managers, according to filings with the Secretary of State’s Office.
Cajun Lagoon, 32347 La. 16 near Arnold Road, opened in April. It is open Monday through Saturday and offers a $20 admission for adults and $15 for children ages 4 through 12.
The family-oriented park features a man-made lake and offers swimming, water slides and volleyball, among other aquatic activities.
The drowning is the second such incident Livingston Parish authorities have investigated since the end of May.
Sheriff’s deputies on May 27 investigated the drowning of Jacques Pierre Demare, 21, of Folsom, on the Amite River while Demare was tubing.
