ON THE MEND

Hand last pitched for the Zephyrs on May 16 at Fresno. Before his next scheduled start May 21 at Sacramento, he injured an oblique while warming up, and that changed his season.

Hand was placed on the disabled list. When he came off, he reinjured his oblique before his start June 17 at Nashville, again warming up.

He again was put on the DL, and on July 19 he was sent to the Gulf Coast League Marlins for a rehab assignment, where he turned in two strong starts.

Hand started the season impressively: In five appearances, he allowed an earned run once — at Round Rock on April 20, when he gave up six runs in 4.2 innings. After pitching six shutout innings at Oklahoma City on April 25, he was called up to the Miami Marlins. In 1.2 innings against the New York Mets, he didn’t allow a run but was sent back to New Orleans the next day.

UP & DOWN

The Marlins called up reliever Steven Ames from the Zephyrs, and right-hander Scott McGough was assigned to New Orleans from Double-A Jacksonville.

Ames came to the Zephyrs from Albuquerque with Josh Wall in the July 6 trade when the Marlins sent Ricky Nolasco to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Infielder Chris Valaika was outrighted to the Zephyrs on Sunday. He had been on a rehab assignment.
