Weatherwise magazine posted an article on the most populous city in the United States. New York City is in an area where atmospheric forces clash, including Canadian arctic air masses and the warm Gulf Stream current flowing northward along the Atlantic Seaboard.
New Yorkers enjoy and despise a variety of weather patterns from tranquil springs and autumns to miserable summertime heat and biting winter cold.
It is also one of few places on the planet that experiences extreme winter storms and powerful hurricanes.
The most notable winter storm was on March 11, 1888, referred to as the Great Blizzard of 1888 or “The Great White Hurricane.” Land-falling hurricanes include the 1821 Norfolk and Long Island Hurricane, the 1893 New York Hurricane and Hurricane Irene in 2011.
