Zephyrs 2, Iowa 1

DES MOINES, Iowa — Kevin Kouzmanoff drilled a two-out single scoring Bryan Petersen, and the New Orleans Zephyrs edged the Iowa Cubs 2-1 in 10 innings Wednesday at Principal Park.

It was another pitcher’s duel between the Zephyrs and Cubs. Tuesday night the Cubs beat the Z’s 1-0. Wednesday was looking the same way.

The game was scoreless through six innings until Nick Green drilled a solo home run to left field to give the Zephyrs the lead.

The Zephyrs’ Doug Mathis pitched six shutout innings, allowing six hits. He struck out three. Iowa starter Brooks Raley went seven innings.

Raley allowed one run on three hits.

The Cubs and Zephyrs threatened several times. The Zephyrs went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, and Iowa went 2-for-11. The Z’s stranded nine base runners and Iowa 11.

In the ninth inning, the Cubs put together three consecutive singles off New Orleans closer Chris Hatcher. Donnie Murphy grounded to shortstop with one out but the Zephyrs could not turn the double play and the Cubs scored the tying run.

Petersen reached in the 10th inning on a walk and scored on the Kouzmanoff single. Hatcher pitched the bottom of the 10th to earn his second win.

The Z’s lead the series 2-1 and improve to 52-53 on the season.
