LAFAYETTE — A Lafayette man who police believe carjacked a woman last week and then used a handgun to rob a Johnston Street bank, has been booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.
Justin Reed Seawright, 31, who was found with the stolen car at a motel in Bay St. Louis, Miss., just before midnight on July 18 was transported back to Lafayette early Monday, authorities said.
Seawright remained in jail Tuesday waiting for an initial court appearance and for a judge to set his bond, according to Capt. Kip Judice, with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Detectives believe Seawright stole a woman’s 2006 Mazda Tribute on July 16, then robbed the Johnston Street branch of The Whitney Bank with a handgun the next day.
Video surveillance captured the image of a man who looked like Seawright holding up the bank.
Seawright dropped his gun before jumping into the stolen Mazda and speeding off, Lafayette police Cpl. Paul Mouton said.
Agents with the U.S. Marshal’s Office raided a motel in Bay St. Louis on July 18 and found Seawright in a room and the Mazda in the parking lot, Mouton said.
