A 20-year-old Zachary man was arrested Monday after he allegedly unsuccessfully tried to solicit sex from a 16-year-old boy, then resorted to trying to blackmail the boy.
Baton Rouge police booked Latrell Stepter, 20, 4980 Lower Zachary Road, into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of indecent behavior with juveniles, computer-aided solicitation of a minor and cyberbullying, police spokesman Lt. Don Kelly said.
Stepter began contacting the victim in November, then ceased contact until March, when he began contacting him again.
Between April 24 and May 30, the victim received 254 text messages, two voice mails and one photo from Stepter’s cellphone, according to an affidavit warrant.
Stepter allegedly solicited sex from the boy and when that failed, police believe Stepter posed as a girl to get the victim to send nude photos and videos of himself, Kelly said.
The victim sent the photos and they were eventually posted on a Facebook page created in the victim’s name without his permission.
Stepter then contacted the victim using his real name and claimed he was being blackmailed by a woman who had pictures of both of them.
“He told the juvenile victim if he didn’t meet Stepter to perform a homosexual act, the female blackmailer was going to post both of their nude photos to the Internet and Stepter would also physically beat up the victim,” Kelly said.
Police also believe Stepter may have victimized others who did not report the incidents to police.
“He apparently has somewhat of a history,” Kelly said in an email. “He had a 2010 warrant from EBRSO (the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office) for something similar and our investigators just have a feeling based on experience that he’s contacted other juveniles besides this one.”
Anyone who was victimized or contacted by Stepter is asked to contact their law enforcement authorities or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
