SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers acquired cornerback Eric Wright in a trade with Tampa Bay that sends a conditional selection in the 2014 draft to the Buccaneers.
The teams announced the deal Friday, one week after Wright was arrested in Los Angeles on an unspecified misdemeanor charge.
He was released after posting bond.
Last season, Wright was suspended for four games by the NFL for violating the performance-enhancing drug policy in his first — and only — season with the Bucs.
He signed a five-year, $35.3 million contract with Tampa Bay after a strong season in Detroit.
In 10 games last year, Wright finished with 37 tackles and one interception.
In 2011 with the Lions, Wright started 16 games and had four interceptions.
He will join a crowded secondary and crop of cornerbacks, including Carlos Rogers, Tarell Brown, Chris Culliver and Nnamdi Asomugha.
“We are pleased to add Eric to our team,” said 49ers general manager Trent Baalke. “As an organization, we have done our due diligence and anticipate Eric working hard to contribute to the 49ers.”
The 49ers announced earlier Friday that they had waived cornerback Lowell Rose, who was signed as an undrafted free agent May 7.
SIX EX-TEAMMATES EMERGE AS POSSIBLE BRENT WITNESSES: In Dallas, six current or former Dallas Cowboys players are on prosecutors’ witness list for the intoxication manslaughter trial of former lineman Josh Brent.
Safeties Danny McCray and Barry Church and cornerback Orlando Scandrick are listed as potential witnesses. Also on the list filed Thursday are retired safety Gerald Sensabaugh; former cornerback Michael Jenkins, now with the Raiders; and fullback Lawrence Vickers, who was released last week.
Brent is charged in a December car crash that killed practice squad player Jerry Brown. Authorities say Brent’s blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit.
His trial is slated to begin Sept. 23, the day after the Cowboys play the St. Louis Rams.
Burnett signs extension: In Green Bay, Wis., the Packers signed safety Morgan Burnett to a contract extension Friday.
Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.
Burnett, a third-round pick from Georgia Tech in 2010, has started all 36 games in which he has appeared in three seasons with the team.
He has 259 tackles, 28 passes defensed, six interceptions, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and three sacks.
Team releases WR Jones: In Foxborough, Mass., the New England Patriots released wide receiver Donald Jones on Friday and signed rookie receivers Perez Ashford and Quentin Sims.
Jones played in 35 NFL games for Buffalo, with 22 starts. He has 82 receptions for 887 yards and six touchdowns.
Last season, Jones played in 12 games, finishing with 41 receptions for 443 yards and four touchdowns.
