• French Accents: In this most Francophile of American cities, Faubourg St. John throws an annual celebration of Bastille Day. Highlights: food, music, art and pétanque, or French lawn bowling. The packed event attracted a crowd as eclectic as its friendly, funky neighborhood.
• Wookie Year: The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus presented “All Hail Our Sacred Drunken Wookiee: A Chewbacchus Art Show at The Big Top” at the 3 Ring Circus. The do-it-yourself sci-fi krewe pays homage to the hairy hero of the “Star Wars” series in its annual Carnival parade.
• Some Enchanted Evening: The Krewe of Orpheus held its annual cocktail party for the officers and lieutenants of the krewe at the Uptown home of Michael Murphy and Brent Becnel. The theme of the 2014 parade -- Orpheus’ 21st -- is “The Enchanted World.” The krewe, founded by Harry Connick Jr., has had many celebrities and monarchs as riders, including Sandra Bullock, Quincy Jones, Anne Rice, Whoopi Goldberg, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Coolidge, James Brown, David Copperfield, Hilary Swank, Cyndi Lauper and Mariska Hargitay.
