The New Orleans Fire Department reported that it was dispatched to a three-alarm blaze in New Orleans East Sunday that significantly damaged a 16-unit apartment building, leaving 13 families displaced.
Firefighters arrived at the Windrun Apartments, 12151 Interstate 10 Service Road, at 12:17 p.m. and found the fire spreading through the roof and attic of the building. Witnesses reported the fire began after a bolt of lightning struck the roof of one of the apartments.
No injuries were reported, and a total of 23 fire trucks and 70 firefighters were called to the scene. The fire was put out by 1:49 p.m. The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the families who were displaced.
A formal investigation is underway and more details will be available soon.
