KAZAN, Russia — LSU senior forward Theresa Plaisance scored eight points in a starting role, and USA Basketball used a 17-2 third-quarter run to pull away from Sweden for a 103-72 win to advance to the semifinals of the World University Games on Friday.
Plaisance played 10 minutes and finished 3-of-3 from the floor. In four contests at the Games, Plaisance is averaging 5.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.
In a semifinal battle of unbeatens, the USA (4-0) takes on Australia (4-0), which beat Canada 72-58. Tipoff is noon Saturday on ESPNU.
Tulane swimming and diving first-year head coach Katie Robinson named two assistants to her coaching staff.
Returning to Tulane is five-time collegiate All-American and U.S. National Team member Chris Devine as diving coach and former All-Mountain West Conference performer Sarah Woodbury as assistant swim coach.
Devine was on the Green Wave staff for the 2004-05 season when Tulane won its only Conference USA title.
Woodbury is coming from Marshall, where she served as an assistant last year.
“Both Chris and Sarah share in my vision to build Tulane into a top program in our conference and on the national level as well,” Robinson said.
YORK, England — LSU sophomore golfer Nadine Dreher and her teammates from Austria advanced through a semifinal match to get to Saturday’s championship round of the European Ladies’ Amateur Team Championship at the Fulford Country Club.
Dreher’s team defeated Finland 5 1/2- 1 1/2 to advance to the final against Spain, a 4 1/2- 2 1/2 winner against England.
Dreher lost her singles match in the two foursomes-five singles format of the championship flight 3&2 to the co-top individual medalist, Oona Vartiainen.
In the consolation bracket, two LSU golfers met head-to- head as Denmark beat Sweden 3-2. LSU freshman-to-be Caroline Nistrup of Denmark scored a 3&2 win over LSU junior Madelene Sagstrom. Denmark advances to a fifth-place match Saturday against France while Sweden will face the Netherlands for seventh place.
Coach Dennis Shaver announced Friday the Tigers and Lady Tigers are set to host their LSU track & field Team Awards and Alumni Recognition Banquet.
The event will be in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Thursday, Sept. 12, ahead of LSU’s football game against Kent State that weekend.
All current and former track and field athletes at LSU are invited. A social is set for 6:30 p.m. with the dinner and banquet at 7:30 p.m.
The event will feature a 25th anniversary celebration of the Lady Tigers’ 1988 NCAA Outdoor Championship team that defended its title from a season before.
