Local Girl Scouts successfully met a challenge of raising $20,000 by the Huey and Angelina Wilson Foundation after two months of fundraising.
The foundation had awarded the Girl Scouts Louisiana East council $40,000 to remove the two parapet brick walls threatening the use of their Regional Service Center in Baton Rouge and challenged them to raise an additional $20,000 by June 30, which the foundation would match if successful.
The Girl Scouts held a challenge luncheon for prospective donors so they could hear from engineer H. Davis Cole and see the damaged walls for themselves, and sent letters, emails, and social media posts to businesses and individual supporters.
Linda Law Clark, first vice chair of the council’s board of directors, said 143 individuals or companies donated, exceeding the $20,000 goal by several thousand dollars.
