Children unharmed after minivan stolen

Authorities are searching for a man who stole a minivan with two children in the back seat around 3:30 a.m. Thursday while the vehicle was left unattended at a gas station at Highland Road and Old Perkins Road.

The children, an 8-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl, were recovered safely at a nearby gas station shortly after the incident, said Casey Rayborn Hicks, an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s spokeswoman.

The man first approached a woman in the parking lot of the Circle K on Highland and she told the man she didn’t speak English, Hicks said.

After the woman and her husband proceeded into the store, the man jumped into the minivan, a blue Toyota Sienna with California license plates, and sped off in the direction of Airline Highway, Hicks said.
