Letter: Court rulings threaten society

The rulings on June 26 overturning the DOMA and Prop 8 mark a sad day for our nation on many levels. These decisions reveal that the court clearly is an activist court, ruling as an oligarchy that seeks to legislate from the bench and usurp the rights of the vast majority of Americans.

These rulings are incremental steps that will lead to even more radical redefinitions of marriage and the home. This also positions our nation in a place of officially abandoning the core institution of any stable society, the traditional family and its values.

The rejecting of traditional family values moves our nation in a direction that historically and from our perspective, biblically, is counterintuitive to what makes a nation stable. Our country is being influenced by a small group of people who hold to radical beliefs that will ultimately have an adverse affect on all of society.

My prayer is that this will be a “wake-up” call to moral-minded citizens to understand that our rights are not just being lost but being taken away rapidly. Those rulings such as this give a new “freedom” to a small minority and yet place greater and greater limitations on the vast majority of moral/religious-minded Americans.

As Southern Baptists we will continue to hold and encourage the biblical declaration that says, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female and said For this cause shall a Man leave his Father and Mother and cleave to his wife and the two shall become one.” (Matthew 19: 4-5)
