Clinton Mayor Lori Bell announced the town staff will sponsor the town’s Eighth annual Red, White, and Blueberry Festival, planned July 5 and July 6 in conjunction with the town’s monthly Saturday market.
The festival will begin Friday with a 6 p.m. ceremony in front of the Town Hall, and children’s activities, food vendors and a fireworks display also are planned.
Anyone wanting to participate in the ceremony or who has questions or suggestions may call the Town Hall at (225) 683-5531 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
A 150th anniversary re-enactment of the surrender of Port Hudson’s Confederate garrison to Union forces will be held at 10 a.m. July 9 outside the museum at Port Hudson State Historic Site on U.S. 61 northwest of Zachary.
The July 4, 1863, surrender at Vicksburg, Miss., and the subsequent surrender at Port Hudson gave the Union forces complete control of the Mississippi River.
During the program, the Confederate garrison flag will be lowered and replaced with an American garrison flag, followed by the firing of a 42-pound cannon.
The public is invited to attend.
Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site in St. Francisville continues its series of “Garden Tour Fridays” with a guided tour at 10 a.m. July 5.
Visitors are invited to join Manager Patricia Aleshire as she leads a monthly stroll through Rosedown’s historic gardens.
The “Garden Tour Fridays” program provides garden enthusiasts with a detailed look at selected portions of one of the finest early 19th-century gardens.
Admission for most adults is $10 to tour the home and gardens, but admission to only the garden is $5.
The Jackson Historic District Commission is calling for entries in an art show and contest to be held later this year. Cash prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place entries.
The artwork should depict an event, place (modern day or historical depiction) or person significant to the history of the town of Jackson and should be accompanied by a brief statement of the same.
The entries do not have to be framed but must be wired for hanging.
Historical photographs, as well as a packet relating to the history of Jackson, are available upon request.
The commission will accept entries between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. July 29-31 at Banten House, 1516 Charter St., Jackson.
