Acadiana briefs for June 26, 2013

Cox helps Acadiana Boys & Girls Clubs

Cox Communications recently donated computers, related software and technology, and Internet service to two Boys & Girls Club locations in Abbeville and Lafayette.

The “Cox Technology Centers” celebrated grand openings last week. The centers feature state-of-the-art computer equipment, including desktops, monitors, laptops, printers, docking stations, wireless routers, wireless cards, and proprietary Microsoft and Club Tech software.

Cox also provides free high-speed Internet to Boys & Girls Clubs of Acadiana and nationwide within the Cox service area.

The donation is part of a $300,000 grant from Cox Communications and the Cox Foundation to assist 12 clubs across the country.

The new centers are at the Abbeville Boys & Girls Club, 301 AA Comeaux Memorial Drive and the Jackie Club, 1000 Marie Antoinette St., Lafayette.

School system offers central registration

The Lafayette Parish School System will offer one-stop registration services for parents and guardians this week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the former LeRosen Elementary School, 516 E. Pinhook Road.

The centralized registration continues from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the following dates: July 17, July 18, Aug. 7 and Aug. 8. Students begin school Aug. 14.

The centralized registration enables parents to register more than one child, even if they’re attending different schools; register for student services; and meet with district personnel about issues ranging from health and wellness to transportation, all in one location.

However, parents still will need to visit their child’s school to schedule classes and receive school supply lists.

Registration is necessary for students moving into the district or if a currently enrolled child relocated within the school district into a new school zone.

Parents are required to bring the following: student’s birth certificate, Social Security card, immunization records, last report card and proof of address (utility bill in parent/guardian’s name).

Registration forms are available at www.lpssonline.com and at registration.

The completion of registration forms prior to their visit to LeRosen will reduce parents’ wait time, school officials said.

For more information, contact the district’s Health and Wellness Department at (337) 521-7090.
