In naming Ava Leavell Haymon as Louisiana’s new poet laureate, Gov. Bobby Jindal has selected a writer who’s already done much to widen the audience for poetry. We wish Haymon well in her new post.
Haymon, of Baton Rouge, is a nationally recognized poet and teacher who organizes poetry workshops and seminars throughout the state. Her three poetry collections have been published by LSU Press.
We’ve long admired Haymon’s enthusiasm for poetry, and we’re confident that she’ll be able to inspire excitement about poetry among other Louisiana residents during her two-year appointment as the state’s poet laureate.
Haymon’s annual Christmas poems have become a cherished yuletide tradition among her friends — and a useful reminder that all good poetry is a gift worth savoring.
We congratulate Haymon on her appointment.
