Police: Woman hit in boyfriend’s barrage

A 29-year-old convicted criminal from New York allegedly shot his girlfriend through the foot as he gunned down another man in a Central Business District hotel room Tuesday morning.

Kevin Cahill, 29, got into a fight with a 49-year-old Florida man in a hotel room at the Wyndham Garden Baronne Plaza around 9:15 a.m., according to the New Orleans Police Department. Cahill allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the other man multiple times. In the process, he also inadvertently shot his 27-year-old girlfriend, Sara Mott, in the foot, police said.

The Florida man, whom police have not yet named, was left bleeding in the hotel room. The couple fled the hotel on foot, the NOPD said.

A trail of blood led out of the hotel’s stairwell onto the 200 block of Baronne Street. Witnesses reported seeing pools of blood along both sides of Baronne.

The couple ended up in a building across the street.

Hotel guests and employees from nearby businesses gathered along the sidewalks shortly after the shooting as police cordoned off the block with crime scene tape. Some said they counted multiple gunshots.

They watched as an ambulance arrived, and paramedics went inside the building with a stretcher to fetch Mott.

She wailed and covered her face as paramedics rolled her past a half-dozen television cameras. She was taken to the hospital in good condition.

Cahill was escorted out in handcuffs.

The NOPD reported finding a handgun and drugs in the hotel room. The department would not say Tuesday if all three were guests at the hotel.

The 49-year-old Florida man was taken to the hospital and remains in critical condition.

Cahill will be booked with attempted murder, aggravated battery, a drug charge and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Mott will be booked with second-degree battery once she is released from the hospital, police said.
