West Feliciana children are invited to attend the sixth annual Summer Fun Day sponsored by the West Feliciana Drug and Alcohol Awareness Council, Sheriff’s Office and district attorney from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the West Feliciana Sports Park.
The program includes free food, door prizes, special guests, interactive games, water slides, police dog demonstrations, a visit by Miss Louisiana Teen, face painting, health screenings, equipment displays, pet adoptions, petting zoo, the Angola farm horses and wagon rides.
Graduates of Jackson State University are invited to attend the Baton Rouge alumni chapter’s membership roundup from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Baker branch library, 3501 Groom Road.
Louisiana State Penitentiary had a bumper potato crop this year, and Warden Burl Cain arranged to donate 3,000 pounds of spuds to the food banks in East and West Feliciana parishes this week.
Inmates grow more than 5 million pounds of vegetables at Angola each year to feed inmates at five prisons, spokeswoman Cathy Fontenot said.
This year’s potato crop exceeded what will be needed at the prisons, she said.
Audubon State Historic Site on La. 965 in West Feliciana Parish presents “After the Battle,” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, a program on the use of area homes as Civil War hospitals during the June 1863 assaults at nearby Port Hudson. Talks on Civil War medicine and surgery will be included.
Dr. Gregory Crenshaw of Vascular Specialty Center will discuss peripheral arterial disease during a free “Ask the Doctor” lunch and learn session from noon to 1 p.m. June 27 in the staff development classroom of Lane Regional Medical Center in Zachary.
Crenshaw will discuss the causes, symptoms and treatment of the disease. Advance reservations are required; call (225) 654-LANE (5263). A light lunch is part of the free program.
The Louisianan Emergency Preparedness Association recently presented Capt. Bonnie Hines of West Feliciana Parish Fire Protection District 1 with a dedication award for doubling the district’s public education and outreach efforts in three years. She manages the public education program and an apprenticeship program that includes high school students interested in becoming a firefighter or emergency medical worker.
The Louisiana State Firemens Association recently awarded District 1’s Jeremy Stogner and 28 other volunteer firefighters from across the state with education reimbursement grants. A certified firefighter and medical first-responder, Stogner graduated from LSU in May with a degree in mechanical engineering.
The Zachary Chamber of Commerce awarded its 2013 scholarship to Sarah Grimball, a graduate of Zachary High School and the daughter of James and Janet Grimball. She will be attending LSU to major in business.
