This listing at 5150 Shady Park Dr. in Crown Point is a plantation-style house on 2.6 acres with mature oak trees in a country setting. "This home has never flooded and needs updating," said Lana Cox, one of the listing agents with her daughter Susan Cox Bourgeois of Market Place Realty. "But, once that's done, it could be a real show place."
The house is set on over two acres of land filled with mature oak trees and plenty of grass. In the style of old plantation homes, a brick walkway leads to a stunning grand exterior staircase which curves around to the upstairs balcony. This balcony is most unusual in that its sides extend beyond the length of the house, giving owners a four-sided wraparound porch.
In plantation homes, these balconies were often constructed to take advantage of the cooling breezes; with the advent of air conditioning, they're now just beautiful and decorative. Graceful columns march across the front, down the sides and across the back of the house. All along the back façade are French doors opening from a brick entranceway.
"When you enter the downstairs, you're in a lovely foyer with a beautiful curving staircase leading to the second floor," said Bourgeois, "and this foyer has a gorgeous crystal chandelier which usually draws gasps from visitors."
The home has five spacious bedrooms and four full- and one half-bath. There is a large living room which opens onto the balcony via a set of French doors - and there's another sparkling chandelier to light your way. The kitchen contains all the requisite appliances and its cabinets are finished in natural wood. The floors are also natural wood and polished to a high gleam.
In addition to the house becoming a potential
showplace, Cox and Bourgeois stress that this listing is a very good buy for the money.
"We've received a current flood insurance quote of $1,000 a year, which is good through 2014," said Bourgeois. "Based on the new flood maps being adopted and rates being raised, we have been informed that the flood insurance cost will rise only to $3,000 a year."
Crown Point, where this plantation-style house is located, is part of a suburban area of New Orleans on the west bank of the Mississippi River and is composed of parts of three parishes. In addition to Crown Point, the Westbank includes the cities and towns of Waggaman, Avondale, Bridge City, Nine Mile Point, Westwego, Marrero, Harvey, Gretna, Terrytown, Jean Lafitte, Lafitte, Barataria, Estelle, Timberlane, and part of Woodmere.
There are three bridges and three ferries which connect the Westbank to the Greater New Orleans area. The main bridge is the Crescent City Connection which goes down town and to the Super Dome. The Huey P Long Bridge, known for its narrow lanes, connects Bridge City to Elmwood and is undergoing a widening project. The third and newest is the Hale Boggs Bridge in St. Charles Parish.
Three ferries run from one side of the river to the other. The Gretna and Algiers ferry cross the river and dock at the same landing area near the foot of Canal Street in down town New Orleans. West Jefferson Medical Center, founded in 1956, is a 427-bed, full service community hospital, located in the heart of the West Bank.
Through its history, it has had an amazing $13.5 billion economic impact on the community. Not only is West Jefferson an important corporate entity and economic engine, today it is the major provider of healthcare for Westbank residents.
