Delgado Community College Athletic Director Tommy Smith announced his retirement Thursday, effective June 30.

Smith, a staple of Delgado Athletics for the past 31 seasons, joined the department in 1981 as an assistant basketball coach and baseball coach under the program’s founder, “Rags” Scheuermann. In 1986, Smith succeeded Scheuermann and became the Dolphins’ second athletic director, a capacity he has held for the past 27 years.

Smith was named head coach for Delgado men’s basketball in 1990. His teams made eight Region 23 tournament appearances and claimed five Miss-Lou Conference championships, the most recent in 2010.

Smith was also instrumental in introducing Delgado’s first women’s sport, women’s basketball, in 1993.
