In Memphis, Tenn., Duane Below pitched seven shutout innings, and the New Orleans Zephyrs defeated the Memphis Redbirds 7-0 Thursday.
The Zephyrs scored four first-inning runs and a pair of second-inning runs to jump out to a 6-0 lead.
New Orleans sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring four runs on two hits.
Below (3-2) limited the Redbird hitters to three hits in the win. He walked two batters, struck out three and got a pair of double plays. It was Below’s longest outing of the season.
The Zephyrs recorded their fifth shutout of the season. James Leverton and Chris Hatcher each pitched a scoreless inning.
Memphis starter Mitchell Boggs worked two innings, allowing six runs on five hits, while walking two in the loss. Boggs recently was sent from St. Louis to Triple-A and has dropped to 0-2 in three starts.
Gorkys Hernandez led the Zephyrs with three hits. Jordan Brown and Matt Downs each had a hit and two runs batted in.
The Zephyrs won the first and last games in the series but dropped the series 3-2.
Five shutouts is the third most in the PCL. The Zephyrs improved to 25-9 when scoring the first run.
