Tip leads police to cache of guns, drugs

A Kenner man was arrested Tuesday after police found dozens of marijuana plants, guns, rifles and military-grade body armor in his home.

An anonymous tip led officers to David Hart’s house in the 100 block of Milsaps Place, where detectives found the drugs and weapons during a search, Kenner police spokesman Sgt. Brian McGregor said.

Police also found gas masks, an improvised ammunition handbook, 145 grams of marijuana and ammunition, McGregor said.

Hart, 33, who has a previous felony conviction for assault by drive-by shooting, was booked with manufacturing a Schedule I controlled dangerous substance (32 marijuana plants), illegal possession of a Schedule I controlled dangerous substance (145 grams of marijuana), possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance, unlawful possession of body armor and illegal possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain felonies.

Hart remained in police custody Wednesday with no bond, McGregor said.

Covington man gets prison for child porn

A Covington man was sentenced Wednesday to eight years in prison after he pleaded guilty to having nearly 1,500 images of child pornography stored on his computer.

According to court documents, Joshua Nettles, 38, downloaded and saved images depicting the sexual exploitation of prepubescent minors, including images of victims younger than 4 years old.

A forensic review of Nettles’ computer found he downloaded about 1,409 images and 14 videos of child pornography.

Nettles will be face five years of supervised release and will be required to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.

N.O. East stabbing suspect arrested

A 22-year-old woman was arrested on a charge of attempted second-degree murder after she stabbed a woman multiple times early Wednesday morning in New Orleans East.

The stabbing, which police described as a domestic incident, was initially reported about 2:45 a.m. at Chef Menteur Highway and Downman Road.

A second call related to the same case came in to police at 4:13 a.m. from the 4600 block of Ray Street.

Officer Garry Flot, a police spokesman, said he could not immediately give details on the incident since a report was not yet finalized.

But just before 1 p.m. Wednesday, Breonna Stovall — who celebrated her 22nd birthday Tuesday — was booked on a count of attempted second-degree murder in connection with the case, according to Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office records.

The 21-year-old victim was treated at a local hospital.

Her condition was not available.

Police: Friend rapes woman in St. Claude

A woman was raped Tuesday evening in St. Claude, New Orleans police said.

The victim, whose age was not provided, was sexually assaulted by a family friend about 7:30 p.m. at a home in the 1800 block of Gallier Street.

No other information was immediately available, and police did not announce any arrests.

Man wanted in beating, robbery

Police are searching for a man who beat and robbed a woman as she walked her dog and fed cats last week in Bayou St. John.

The woman was near North Gayoso and Toulouse streets about 2 a.m. Thursday when a car passed her and stopped.

A man got out, walked toward the woman while he held a gun and told her to hand over her bag, police said.

The man then hit the woman, who fell to the ground, and kicked her several times before he took her bag.

The man hopped back into his car and fled on Toulouse Street in a lakebound direction.

Police described the attacker as a black man between 20 and 24 years of age, 6 feet, 2 inches and 200 pounds with a twist hair style.

He wore a black tank top, dark pants and has a gap in his teeth, police said.

Police report teacher had child porn

School officials say a 43-year-old Grace King High School teacher accused of child pornography has been placed on indefinite leave from his job.

The Jefferson Parish public school system disclosed the employment status of Walter Sologaistoa, of Kenner, but did not say whether the Spanish teacher is still being paid.

Sologaistoa was booked Friday with 10 counts of distributing child pornography, according to court records.

NOPD identifies murder suspect, 30

Investigators are searching for a man they say is responsible for a murder last week in St. Claude.

Donald Powell, 30, allegedly shot Calvin Thomas about 5 p.m. Saturday in the 1400 block of Mazant Street. Thomas died a short time later at Interim LSU Public Hospital.

Powell is wanted for second-degree murder.
