The Young Ministers Association, whose members are from Baker, Zachary, Port Hudson and Baton Rouge, will have its Second annual Juneteenth Celebration Friday and Saturday at New Pilgrim Baptist Church, 4415 Old Weis Road, Zachary.

Juneteenth is a celebration commemorating the June 19, 1865, announcement in Galveston, Texas, of President Abraham Lincoln’s Jan. 1, 1863, Emancipation Proclamation.

The 7 p.m. Friday “praise and worship” service will include a talk by the Rev. Thomas Bessix, of Baton Rouge.

On Saturday, the organization plans an outdoor fellowship and family day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the church. The public is invited to attend both events.

Flag retirements

Friday is Flag Day, and the Alexander Stirling Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, East Feliciana High School Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps and Boy Scout Troop 51 will have a flag retirement ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Louisiana War Veterans Home on La. 10 east of Jackson.

Anyone who has a battered or tattered flag is welcome to attend and give it a dignified retirement.

Rhythm and rock

Guitarist and educator Dave James will play jazz, blues, country and rock music during appearances next week at East Baton Rouge Parish libraries. In the northern part of the parish, he’ll be at the Zachary branch library, 1900 Church St., at 2 p.m. Monday; the Baker branch, 3501 Groom Road, at 4 p.m. Monday; and the Pride-Chaneyville branch, 13600 Pride-Port Hudson Road., at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Audubon music

The Audubon Regional Library presents songs and stories for young readers by Johnette Downing next week. She’ll be at the Greensburg branch at 1 p.m. Tuesday, at the Clinton United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Wednesday and the Jackson branch at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Health services expand

Lane Regional Medical Center is expanding its Lane Behavioral Health Services to include a partial hospitalization program for adults experiencing an acute mental health crisis, such as major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder and other medical conditions.

The new program, offered in addition to regular outpatient services, is a five-day intensive outpatient program, requiring a physician’s referral. Call (225) 658-6640 to schedule a confidential assessment.
